History
We teach History in depth as part of our 'Discover' Term.
We teach children to be historians through the lens of four chosen historical concepts: Hierarchy and Power, Everyday life, Invasion and Settlement and Legacy. These concepts are introduced in EYFS and built on throughout Key Stage 1 and 2, ensuring children have a deep understanding of these concepts and how they existed in different periods of History.
We believe teaching chronology is vital for helping children organise information, grasp the "big picture" of history, and understand cause-and-effect. It acts as the "air that history breathes," allowing pupils to place events in sequence, understand change over time, and develop a structured framework that aids memory and reduces confusion between periods studied. In mixed-age classes with a three-year rolling curriculum, this requires constant revisiting to ensure that children can place events in World and British History, when we cannot teach this in chronological order. We use timelines, personalised to learning throughout the year to ensure a clear grasp on chronology.
We believe in bringing history to life through cultural visits, particularly alongside local history studies. We emerse children in the world they are studying through stories and literature. After all, history is exactly that – a story that wants to be told.
