Ash Class Phonics Planning

Below are some plans to support you in teaching phonics at home.  There is one plan for each year group.

The children have already learnt these sounds previously in their phonic sessions at school.  However, based on our assessments it is important to revisit the sounds again to consolidate the children's learning for reading and writing each of the sounds.

Week Beginning:  13th July 2020
Week Beginning: 6th July 2020
If you feel that your child would benefit by recapping the sounds from Phase 2, 3 or 4 for blending, please use the phoneme frames  attached.  There is no need to print these.  You could just show the image and invite your child to write them down in their book or on a whiteboard.  If you do wish to print them, to save your ink at home you can print multiple pages onto one sheet.
Week Beginning: 29th June 2020
Week Beginning: 22nd June 2020
Week Beginning: 15th June 2020
Week Beginning: 8th June 2020
Week Beginning: 1st June 2020
Week Beginning: 18th May 2020
Week Beginning:  11th May 2020
As mentioned during previous weeks, if you would like to tune into the DfE online Letters and Sounds sessions, please follow the link under the 4th May.
Week Beginning: 4th May 2020

Below, you will find the phonics planning for the week ahead.  As mentioned last week, if you feel that your child is best suited to one of the videos provided by the DfE, please tune into their YouTube channel.

EYFS children:

The DfE are producing two different sets of videos.

11am - This recaps the Phase 2 sounds and provides extra practice for individual sounds and reading words such as 'tap' or 'cat'.

(You may find this useful for your child)

10am - This will focus on Phase 3 and Phase 4 sounds. (We will pick these up later when they align but feel free to recap)

Year 1 - This will focus on Phase 5. (We will follow the order of this plan but this will involve an amalgamation of revisiting sounds and alternative spellings as well as new alternative spellings.)

Week Beginning:  27th April 2020

Dear Parents,

You will probably have seen that the DfE is producing a lot of different resources and this week they have produced Phonics Session videos that you can access via Youtube.  Each day has a specific sound and the video has a specific time that it goes live for.  The upload will then be there for the rest of the Summer term.  You will see the introduction letter listed below and you can also view an introduction video.  The most important thing to remember is that your child needs to be secure in their learning. This means that they MUST be confident in the books that they are reading with only a couple of words that they decode.  Common best practice today is to teach and then assess where each individual child is and to check that they are working in the correct phase and that their reading books match this.  Those who find particular sounds difficult will then be supported in addition to the daily phonics session.   You will notice that our new reading books in school and those on the Active Learn website are fully decodable apart from the tricky common exception words, which support that phase. The DfE also explains the importance of this in their introduction video.

As a team, we know where your children are within their learning and therefore will continue to set the phonics activities for each week for both year groups, putting in links to the videos when possible.  Some of the sounds have already been covered and if this occurs we will look at alternative spellings for that sound. For Year 1, there will be a mixture of previously visited sounds and new alternative spelling patterns so we will follow the day by day schedule and link our planning to that.  For EYFS, they are revisiting sounds we have previously looked at so we will provide our own planning and put in links to videos when appropriate.  However, if your child needs additional support to develop blending CVC words, there is a video to support this and then another video to recap the Phase 3 sounds.
